Who is this training right for?

 

This course is highly recommended for anyone who will drive a 4WD on sealed and unsealed roads.

It is suited for the mining, oil and gas, construction, agricultural and environmental sector.

One-day Course (4WD1)

Duration: 7.5 hours

AIM

To improve participant knowledge and skills in operating four wheel drive vehicles in a wide range of situations and conditions to reduce crashes, lower vehicle running costs and be more aware of environmental issues that relate to driving. Client specific information can be included in the presentation. Course participants will receive a digital Statement of Attainment upon successful completion.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students must hold a valid AU/NZ Drivers Licence (Class C) or equivalent.

Licences must be presented to the assessor prior to the commencement of the course.

If you are still on a provisional licence, you must bring your own P plates to be displayed on the vehicle during your individual practical on-road assessment.

Please advise when booking if you hold an extraordinary licence as other conditions may apply.

  • Risks associated with day to day and minesite /regional driving (gravel roads)
  • The additional risks associated with operating four wheel drives as compared to passenger vehicles
  • Pre-drive vehicle inspections. (Pre-journey planning)
  • Wheel changing
  • Four wheel drive systems (part-time/full-time)
  • Free wheeling hubs
  • Tyres and inflation
  • Seating position and cabin safety
  • Braking distances and techniques
  • Fatigue management (journey management)
  • Animals and stock on road.
  • The effects of alcohol impairment on drivers
  • Employing a “system of car control” to prevent loss of control
  • When four wheel drive should be employed

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

  • Develop an awareness of how attitude and risk taking behaviour effect driver safety and the safety of others
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform pre-drive vehicle inspections
  • Demonstrate wheel changing ability
  • Learn about the early warning signs of fatigue and how to avoid this serious problem.
  • Understand how alcohol affects drivers
  • Understand the basic types of 4WD systems and the advantages and disadvantages of 4WD vehicles.
  • Understand the risks associated with driving and the statistics that support this.
  • Understand the importance of correct tyre pressures and the effect on safety, tyre life and fuel efficiency.
  • Understand the importance of seat belts, along with the securing of loads and the dangers of loose items.
  • Through practical driving manoeuvres, develop an awareness of stopping distances and speed. Particularly, how the degree of difficulty increases exponentially in relation to actual speed.
  • Learn about the types and causes of skids and how to prevent rather than control these situations.
  • Develop ways to predict potential hazards, identify risk situations and minimise danger. Understand the importance of drivers keeping their vision up and maintaining “safety cushions”.
  • Develop understanding and knowledge in relation to road law and the way the law is interpreted.
  • Understand that there are strategies to combat frustration and impatience when driving.
  • Through practical driving manoeuvres develop skills and knowledge in operating four wheel drive vehicles in a range of road conditions.
