Course Units
Who is this training right for?
Those seeking to improve their skills to operate quad bikes and/or side-by-side utility vehicles.
One-day Course (COM1)
1 Day for both units
½ Day for a single unit
AIM
To improve the skills and knowledge required to safely operate quad bikes and/or side by side utility vehicles including undertaking pre-start checks and shut down procedures.
For private bookings client specific information can be included in the presentation.
Students will receive a digital Statement of Attainment upon successful completion.
Entry Requirements
Students must be 17 years of age or over and hold a valid AU/NZ Drivers Licence (Class C) or equivalent.
Licences must be presented to the assessor prior to the commencement of the course.
If you are still on a provisional licence, you must bring your own P plates to be displayed on the vehicle during your individual practical on-road assessment.
Please advise when booking if you hold an extraordinary licence as other conditions may apply.
Students will be required to provide their Unique Student Identifier (USI) number prior to the commencement of the course.
Students are required to wear comfortable and appropriate attire for outdoor activities, including flat enclosed shoes.
Content – AHCMOM217 Operate quad bikes
- Identify hazards and risks associated with quad bike areas of operation
- Components, controls and features of a quad bike and their function
- Identify and avoid riding surfaces, terrains and slopes that are dangerous to safe operation of quad bikes
- Quad bike no go areas
- Environmental impacts associated with operating quad bikes and the consequences of substandard environmental and biosecurity practices
- Selecting, fitting and using a quad bike helmet and other personal protective equipment
- Maintaining PPE
- Loading and unloading safely from a trailer, transportation device or site storage
- Operating principles and operating methods for quad bikes
- Quad bike active riding techniques
- Effects of different riding surfaces and terrain conditions
- Load limits and attachments specific to quad bike capabilities
- Start, steer, manoeuvre, position and stop a quad bike in a controlled manner.

Content – AHCMOM216 Operate side by side utility vehicles
- Identify hazards and risks associated with side by side utility vehicle areas of operation
- Components, controls and features of a side by side utility vehicle and their function
- Side by side utility vehicle functional applications, including:
- Occupant hand holds and their correct use
- Importance of keeping body parts inside the vehicle
- Roll-over protective structure
- Tyre selection and inflation pressure
- Side nets and doors
- Identify and avoid riding surfaces, terrains and slopes that are dangerous to safe operation of side by side utility vehicles
- Side by side utility vehicle no go areas
- Environmental impacts associated with operating side by side utility vehicles and the consequences of substandard environmental and biosecurity practices
- Selecting, fitting and using a side by side utility vehicle helmet and other personal protective equipment
- Maintaining PPE
- Loading and unloading safely from a trailer, transportation device or site storage
- Operating principles and operating methods for side by side utility vehicles
- Higher level two foot pedal operation skills
- Effects of different riding surfaces and terrain conditions
